5. Many Katrina Victims Remain in Crisis
It has been three years now since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the gulf coast leaving a wake of destruction and chaos in its path and creating a crisis situation for numerous people that remains largely unresolved today. Communities, businesses, and government at all levels will continue to struggle with the effects of this disaster for years to come. Thousands of individuals and families will never be the same and many may never completely recover from this crisis. Many people have lost virtually everything they held dear in life and have been forced into situations that are completely foreign to their former way of life. Crisis is a term that is used quite frequently but, like an iceberg, the greater aspects of a crisis may not be recognized or understood. People sometimes say, “the crisis has passed”, but has it really? A crisis may be thought of as an event that creates a loss or a threat of a loss for an individual. It is important to understand what happens to people when they experience a crisis. The event may have the effect of temporarily overwhelming and immobilizing the individual. Their psychological balance is disrupted and their normal ways of responding to stress may not be available to them or may be inadequate to deal with the level of stress they are experiencing. Consequently, they may be unable to function in their normal life roles. They feel confused and have difficulty thinking clearly, sorting out various alternatives to solving problems, formulating plans and making decisions. Like a drowning man “grabbing at straws” so to speak, they may act impulsively with meaningless or inappropriate activity. Some people may be so overwhelmed and immobilized that they tend to do nothing, seemingly accepting their fate. Along with being overwhelmed, confused and immobilized, people in crisis experience a number of very intense emotions, which may include anger, depression, anxiety, grief, guilt, fear, and other mixed emotions that tend to accentuate their confusion. These feelings seem to be flying around in in one's head like snowflakes in a blizzard, and it is often difficult to sort out what they are feeling or how to express it. Not the least of these feelings is anger. Sometimes one's feelings, particularly anger, can be so strong that the person may be afraid to express them for fear that they will come out inappropriately. Feelings of anger are significant because there may not be a clear object for their anger, and consequently, the individual may not know how to direct these feelings. While feelings may sometimes come out inappropriately, most people try to hold these intense feelings inside, and by doing so, they may increase their problems. Holding feelings inside may be compared to putting air in a balloon. As more air is added into the balloon, an increasing amount of strength is required for the balloon to contain the air. Of course, the balloon will eventually burst. While people may not burst like a balloon, they will use an increasing amount of their strength and energy to contain their feelings. This strength and energy is needed by the individual to address the difficulties imposed by the crisis. Thus, holding feelings inside not only reduces the person's personal resources to cope with the crisis, but also adds to their confusion, further complicating their situation. While an individual may be able to “keep the lid on” his feelings, he may tend to tire easily and become more susceptible to either physical and/or emotional illness and injury. Other problems that frequently accompany a crisis include impaired sleep and appetite, generalized anxiety and depression. Some people may develop a post traumatic stress disorder in response to a severe crisis and experience symptoms such as being easily startled and hyper vigilant, have bad dreams, intrusive thoughts or flashbacks of the stressful situation. A few may experience a psychotic episode. There are several things that individuals and families need in order to begin to recover from a crisis. Support and information are very important. People need to understand what is happening to them. They need information to begin to understand that their feelings of being overwhelmed, immobilized and confused are generally a normal natural reaction to what they have experienced. They need to understand that these feelings can subside in time and that they can again feel normal. They need to be able to express their mixed emotions in a safe and secure environment. Frequently people are discouraged from crying and are led to feel that crying is a weakness. To the contrary, crying is a strength and may be seen as a God-given way of expressing feelings. They will benefit from assistance in becoming aware of other strengths as well, and also the fact that they have been successful in overcoming prior obstacles. They need to understand that the crisis they are experiencing has broken down their adjustments to life, that there will be changes in their life as as result of the crisis, and that at some point they will resort back to their old ways of coping with stress and readjust. They can benefit from guidance from a supportive person in order to evaluate their former ways of coping with stress and to consider newer and perhaps more functional ways of coping. They need to understand that since change and readjustment are going to occur, they have a rare opportunity to develop more positive ways of coping with stress and making perhaps more positive and functional adjustments in their life: that with information, support and guidance they can experience personal growth in their life. The losses experienced by individuals and families who were victims of Hurricane Katrina are numerous and complex, and go far beyond losses that are obvious, such as home, possessions, jobs, possible death of a family member, separation from friends, and in general, the loss of a way of life. Many of these losses encompass the potential loss of a future of stability and security. As a result of stress, many have losses in terms of physical health and mental stability. Some have lost a sense of direction in their lives. Numerous others have lost their sense of security and trust that they will be protected. Sometimes, there is a loss of hope and faith in themselves, their families and even their faith in God.
